How it Works

A hybrid heat pump water heater uses two water heating mechanisms:

Air-to-water heat pump (ECO mode):
Extracts heat from surrounding air and transfers it to water, delivering up to four times higher efficiency (COP 4.0) than traditional electric heaters.

Electric heating element (Hybrid mode):
Provides backup heating during high water demand or extremely low temperatures, ensuring a consistent hot water supply year-round.

Most of the time the system uses ECO mode. When operating in ECO mode all day, the water heater consumes approximately 5.7 kWh per day-equivalent to around €1 in EU electricity costs. System can operate efficiently in ECO mode even in sub-zero temperatures down to -7°C.

Quality

  • Porcelain-enamel tank offering high corrosion resistance.
  • 54 mm water tank heat insulation.
  • Highly efficient microchannel heat exchanger with a larger heat transfer area. The heat exchanger does not come into contact with the water in the tank, eliminating corrosion and leakage risks.
  • Enclosure made of galvanized steel.
  • Built-in magnesium protection anode rod.
  • LED display with touch control.
  • Intelligent defrosting system.

New Technologies

The new generation of ELIX hybrid heat pumps uses a new heat exchanger system that includes a new compressor and the innovative refrigerant R-290.

Advantages of the R-290 Refrigerant:

  • Environment-Friendly: R-290 refrigerant has ultra-low GWP of 3 and zero Ozone Depletion Potential.
  • Energy Efficiency: R-290 offers better thermodynamic performance with higher coefficients of performance (COP) than R-134a.
  • Low Operating Pressure: Lower operating pressure reduces component stress and wear.
  • Energy Savings: Systems using R-290 require a smaller amount of refrigerant which results in lower electricity consumption.

Advantages of Using the ELIX Hybrid Heat Pump with a Separate Heating System

  • Energy Savings: Separating heating and hot water production allows the central boiler to be switched off outside the heating season, resulting in significant energy savings.
  • Extended System Lifespan: Turning off the central heating system during summer months helps to prolong its lifespan.
  • Independent System Control: Hot water and space heating can be managed separately, allowing more precise energy use and better system optimization.

Use Your Home's Heat

It is possible to connect the home’s ventilation system to Elix heat pump using air ducts to allow the heat pump to capture and reuse heat from warm indoor air before it is vented outside. Instead of allowing house ventilation to vent out hot air outside, the system may capture it to heat water, significantly improving efficiency especially when outside temperature is low.

Dehumidifier/Cooler Function

The ELIX hot water heat pump can dehumidify and cool air. During operation, it extracts heat and moisture from the surrounding air by condensing the moisture with the help of the evaporator coil. The condensed water is drained away, making the air drier and cooler.

Possible Options for Air Intake & Exhaust

When the heat pump is installed in a room (e.g., garage, utility room, or basement), there are several options for where the air can be drawn from and where it can be vented out:

1. Air intake from the room and air exhaust to the outside

  • • COP (4.0) is high and constant.
  • • Effect of room ventilation.

2. Air intake from the room and air exhaust into the room

  • • Dehumidifier effect.
  • • Room air cooling.
  • • COP (4.0) is high and constant.

3. Air intake from outside and air exhaust to the outside

  • • COP depends on the outside temperature.
  • • Room air remains unaffected.

4. Air intake from house ventilation and air exhaust to the outside

  • • COP (4.0) is high and constant.
  • • Room air remains unaffected.

Installation Requirements for ELIX Heat Pump

  • Power supply: 230V~ / 50Hz
  • Drain pipe for the drain valve: Threaded Rc3/4. Direct to floor drain or external drainage.
  • Drain pipe for condensate: Threaded G3/4. Direct to floor drain or external drainage.
